Dan is a native of Norcross, Georgia and a graduate of Norcross High School (1976). He grew up playing a great deal of basketball, riding horses and generally avoiding school subjects that had to do with any serious study.  His formative years were spent as a member of the First Baptist Church of Norcross, Georgia.

He graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta in 1980 with a degree in Industrial Management  and attended graduate school at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. In 1980, Dan married Lane Gardner –his best friend --and they have just celebrated their twenty—ninth anniversary!  He joined the Methodist Church at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon, Georgia –attracted by the  position of the United Methodist Church  on social justice, God’s grace and emphasis on our  personal responsibility.

Dan spent nearly twenty years in the hospitality industry and was, ultimately, a general manager of several  larger convention hotels throughout the Southeast prior to entering the ordained ministry of the United Methodist Church.

Dan eventually redeemed himself academically by graduating Summa Cum Laude from Memphis Theological Seminary in Memphis, TN with a Master of Divinity. He concentrated there on the study of Wesleyan (Methodist)  theology. While in seminary, Dan served on the staff of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Memphis. Since graduating from seminary, he has served Germantown United Methodist Church as Senior Associate Pastor, Alamo and Center United Methodist Churches in rural Crockett County, TN and Milan First United Methodist.

Dan and Lane have two wonderful children--Whitney, 23, is a newlywed and lives with her husband, Daniel Picard in Colorado Springs, CO. Daniel and Whitney are both graduates of the United States Air Force Academy and both are serving assignments with the Air Force in Colorado Springs.
